BURGERS AND SANDWICHES

Styling a burger is no mean feat and can feel strange at first as you create something full of sticks and wedges. But with a bit of practice, you can feel confident styling even the tallest of burgers and sandwiches.

The trick to perfect burger layers is to have a little bit of everything visible, which means pinning things in exactly the right place using cocktail sticks. You want to stack for the camera, so get your scene and lighting setup, then start building, taking shots of each layer and adjust as you go. Makeup wedges can also be a useful tool if your burger starts sagging in any areas and needs a helping hand to prop up.

Have all the ingredients for each layer ready and prepared on set, this way you can get everything assembled as quickly as possible, rather than trying to chop things as you go. A great bun, griddled to perfection gives you the best base possible to work with, so get the best-looking one you can, and cut it as straight as possible so your burger isn’t wonky. Assemble each layer carefully, tweaking with tweezers and other tools as you go.

Don’t be disheartened if burgers and sandwiches frustrate you for a while. It takes time to master this kind of styling, so keep at it!

3.29 In this burger, I carefully layered each ingredient, securing each one with a cocktail stick as I went so that I had control over the placement, and more stability overall.
